Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry provides a great way to eliminate the anxiety many people feel when faced with a dental visit or dental work. It’s also a convenient alternative for folks who want to complete their dental treatments in as few visits as possible.
At Loftus Family Dentistry, Dr. Loftus and our team deliver safe, soothing care to address all your oral healthcare needs. Sedation dentistry lets you experience complete relaxation during your dental visit and lets Dr. Loftus potentially perform numerous procedures to complete your course of treatment quickly and comfortably.
You and Dr. Loftus will decide which sedation option addresses your specific needs. We offer:
-
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): This commonly used gas containing nitrogen and oxygen elicits a calming effect that lets you remain awake and in control during your procedure. Nitrous oxide prevents discomfort and makes time fly. Since nitrous oxide is mixed with oxygen, it takes effect almost immediately as you inhale it. The effects of nitrous oxide subside quickly following your treatment.
-
Oral Sedation: Sedating medication in the form of a pill promotes relaxation and allows Dr. Loftus to repair years of damage in a matter of hours. Before your appointment, you’ll take a dose of anti-anxiety medicine. During treatment, you’ll enter a peaceful state in which you’ll remain conscious so that you can respond to our team, but you’ll remember little or nothing about the procedure afterward. The feelings created by oral sedation diminish gradually. Please have a friend or family member drive you to and from your sedation dentistry appointment.
-
IV Sedation: For deep sedation, we’ll bring in an anesthesiologist or an oral surgeon to administer sedating medication directly into your bloodstream via an IV. You’ll enter a “twilight sleep” without being completely under as you would with general anesthesia. We’ll monitor you throughout your procedure. As with oral sedation, you’ll need someone to accompany you home following your appointment.
